Color Symbolism

Color Symbolism is the most universal type of symbolism and is found throughout our lives, art, music, literature, physically, and emotionally. The symbolic references to the color as cited from, Dictionary of Symbols by J.E. Cirlot, 2002, are as follows:

 

Red, Orange, Yellow, and White:  Warm, advancing, corresponding to the process of assimilation, activity and intensity

 

Blue, Indigo, Violet and Black:  Cold, retreating, corresponding to the process of dissimilation, passivity, and debilitation

 

Green: Transitional color spanning the two above groups White, Red, and Green: Celtic and Egyptian believe symbolic of Hope, Faith, and Charity Red and Purple: Union of Body and Spirit

 

White: Feminine, Virgin, Purity, Relates to principle, concepts and purpose

 

Red: Blood, Fire, Intense Emotion, Passion, Sentiment, Life-giving principle, Life, Motivation to provide basic needs for self and others, Courage

 

Pink: Sensuality, Human Love, Emotions, Resurrection

 

Orange: Fire and Flames, Pride, Ambition, Wisdom and Justice, Mind and Body, Creativity,Feeling attracted to that which is newly emerging

 

Yellow: Illumination, Excitement, Sun, Dissemination and Comprehensive Generalization, Air, Magnanimity, Intellectual, Mental, Indicate organizational, categorical, management skills

 

Green:  Earthly, Tangible, Growth, Immediate perceptibility, Vegetation, Connection, Fertility of fields, Sympathy, and Adaptability, Healing Skills; likes to see people or projects move to fruition

 

Blue: Clear Thinking, Spatial, God and Goddess of Heaven, Devotion and Innocence, Compassion, Understanding, Communicable; likes learning and understanding

 

Dark Blue/Indigo: Darkness, Stormy Sea, Deeply Spiritual, Inner Awareness of real truth, New Age, Independent

Light Blue: Calmness, Calm Sea

 

Violet: With Green is Water, Nostalgia and Memories, Devotion, Royalty, Power, Spirituality, Ceremony, Deeply Intuitive, humanly spiritual, Color of Transformation

 

Black: Masculine, Fertile Land, Primal, Unconscious, Wisdom stemming from a hidden source, Hidden Power, Need or Skill in protecting oneself or others, May also cover a hidden or understood ability that needs to come forth, Diamond, Initial, Crone, Strong Ability

 

Brown: Earthy and earth bound, connection between nature and natural processes

 

Ochre: Earth

 

Grey: Neutralization, egoism, Inertia, Indifference

 

Gold: Heavenly, Mystic aspects of the Sun, Universal Love

 

Silver: Moon, Lunar, Transmission; transmit data

 

Copper: Conductivity, Pliable, Sensitivity
